TextFree is an app that allows both iPhone and iPod Touch users to send FREE texts to any US mobile number! When you get TextFree you will be asked to set up an “@textfree.us” email only for this app. When you send texts to phones or email addresses (more information later) your name will show up with the “@textfree.us” email.

So Here are The Pros and Cons Of Using TextFree!

TextFree Version: 3.0 Unlimited

Device: iPod Touch 2nd Generation

TextFree is by a company called Pinger. Pinger has two versions of TextFree in the app store a free one and a Sending a messagepaid or Unlimited version. The only difference is TextFree Free only allows you to send 15 txts per-day and the unlimited version is pretty self explanatory and allows you to send ,you guessed it, unlimited texts. The GUI of textfree is pretty easy to use and explore! (See Pictures) In this review i am using the unlimited version of TextFree so you will have to trust me that you can only send 15 texts per-day with the free version! But anyway you can select anybody in your contacts or type in an email or number, I personally have not tried the type in a number but I believe it would work the same as selecting a contact. TextFree is very similar to the “messages” that comes built into every iPhone! The differences being other then the point blank GUI differences IT IS FREE and even if you do get the free one you can send unlimited texts to other TextFree users. TextFree sets itself apart from all the others because instead of using the mail client to Notificationsend the texts, as seen in most other clients, it using its own system an code to send the texts. If you haven’t already concluded that TextFree’s main job under it all is to find the phones provider and then insert (in the background) the texting address for that provider(ex. “@txt.att.com”) and then email the message to that address! If you have the newest and latest firmware from apple (3.X) you should get, if on first start you let it send you notifications, push notifications just like the real iPhone “Messages” app. As you can see in the image to the left I emailed my @textfree.us address through the mail app and here is what i got! Now this pop-up of sorts will pop up in no matter what application either it be a game or IM+ you can always see who is texting you! As you can see the menu that pops up has two options “Close” which allows you to ignore the message and continue on with your day or the “Viewer” button that brings you to the message in the TextFree application.

PROS:

  • -Allows You To Send and Receive Texts
  • -Push Notifications
  • -Works On All Apple Portable Devices
  • -User Friendly GUI
  • -Free Version for non-heavy texters
  • -Email Notifications
  • -Unlimited Texts To other TextFree users
  • -Text any US mobile phone
  • -All Around great app

CONS:

  • Unlimited Version is a bit Pricey
  • For iPod Touch users you have to be in hotspot range (hardware issue)
  • No changing you account information

So over all the proas weigh out the cons!
My rating: 5 out of 5 Stars

Almost every time I help somebody with, or fix, their computer I get the same question how did you learn all of this? Well, that starts us off. I am a self taught graphic designer, technology enthusiast, social media junky, and die hard (yet not obsessive) Apple fanboy. I am the proud owner of many iDevices and soon enough a MacBook Pro. One of my favorite pass times is hang out with friends so, when I am not typing out the latest news in the tech world,I am most likely hanging out with friends either in person or on Facebook, Twitter, or now Google+.
