Documentation

These specs are good for a device like this but I think that it is a greater version of the iPhone. Also I think a camera would attract more customers but I think we can expect to find one in an upgrade soon. These are available for shipping in around 60 days but 90 days for the 3g. The prices start at $499-$829. For the lowest spec model you will be paying $499 for 16gb, and you will be paying $629 for the 16gb 3g. For the 32gb you will be paying $599 and $729 for the 3g, for the highest model you will pay $699 for the 64gb and $829 for the 3g.

I honestly think that it would have had a chance if it had the real Mac OS X as its operating system, as opposed to the iPhone OS. It’s basically an iPod touch that’s too big to fit in your pocket, a target for thieves, and an unsuitable laptop replacement.

Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you: the iFail!

I said it from the beginning: if it doesn’t run full OSX, it will be worthless. What Apple has released is nothing more than an iPod Touch with a larger screen.

    Flaws:
    - iPhone OS 3.1
    - No multitasking
    - No Flash support
    - No pen input support
    - Still tied to the App Store and to iTunes
    - Hardware is poor (I don’t think many people know much about the A4. I believe Gizmodo reported that the iPad can only output 480p, in which case the A4 is inferior to Snapdragon, Tegra, and Tegra 2)
    - Specs are inferior to netbooks of equal value (The $824 64GB Flash memory in the iPad is inferior to a 160GB HDD or any SSD in cheaper netbooks)
    - 4:3 Screen (16:9 movies get black bars. Combined with the already large bezel, this means lots of lost screen space)
    - VGA only (This ties into the whole 480p limit of the device)
    - Poor keyboard (It’s nothing more than a blown-up version of the iPhone keyboard. It’s a typing nightmare and an ergonomic failure)
    - No camera
    - No physical gaming buttons (Apple has been advertising and showing off the iPhone and iPod Touch as gaming devices; Apple had the potential to open up the iPad to all sorts of great gaming genres that were impractical for the buttonless iPhone/iPod Touch. Unfortunately, no buttons means that iPad gaming will be just like iPhone/iPod Touch gaming: limited to mainly minigames)

    Strengths:
    - IPS screen (although Apple had the potential to really turn heads if it had put an OLED screen on the iPad)
    - eBook reader

Basically, this thing costs the same or more than a netbook, yet it has inferior hardware (as most Apple products do, so I’m not surprised) and it runs a mobile OS (making the iPad a very limited device when compared to something like a netbook running Windows 7 or Linux).

Correction: The 64GB iPad without 3G is $699, not whatever I wrote up there. Still, it’s expensive when you consider what you’re getting.

      • 2nerdy4u says:

More Corrections: Sorry, apparently the iPad can output up to 1024×768 with VGA and 480p with composite video. This makes the A4 a better processor than I wrote above.

Also, I think I should mention under eBooks that Amazon has a Windows application called Kindle for PC that can read eBooks, making netbooks a viable eBook reader option.

      • 2nerdy4u says:

One last correction, I promise: Under Strengths, I forgot to mention iWork. It’s a nice feature, but again, a Windows 7 or Linux netbook can run office software anyway. If Apple had put full OSX on the iPad, the iPad would be able to run iWork anyway.

      • Jack Maxwell says:

Sorry, I will just change it, And the information you provided about the screen is wrong as all the information above was found on the Apple site.

      • 2nerdy4u says:

There’s been a misunderstanding. My corrections weren’t correcting you. Your info is official. I was correcting myself.

  3. nookkin says:

I can’t wait until they release a nice WINDOWS based iPod touch-like device. Not Windows Mobile… but the real Windows.

Anyway, back to the point, I was laughing profusely when I read about the ipad. Not only that, my iPod touch corrects it to upas. When I read about the specs, I actually felt sorry for poor Steve Jobs. This device is even more of an embarassment than the Macbook Air, which at least had the advantage of being an ultrathin but fully functional laptop.

    • 2nerdy4u says:

Full Windows on something the size of the iPod Touch is impractical. As far as phone-sized devices go, I’m hoping WM7 exceeds expectations at MWC.

If you mean a larger slate tablet (something the size of the iPad for example) running Windows, they’re out there (the Archos 9, for example, which has a 1.3MP webcam, full desktop OS, etc.).

I had a similar reaction to the iPad. I was walking into Physics class when I remembered about the event. I decided to use a lab computer to check out the iPad. I saw some photos and saw the specs, and I started laughing uncontrollably. Class was beginning at this point, and so I told the rest of my class what sort of device the iPad had turned out to be, at which point even my physics teacher started laughing.

    • Jack Maxwell says:

HA yeah, It is a great device I think that this device will start off a trend for high end companies making tablet devices there is a lot to expect in the coming year.
