Steve Jobs showing off the new iPad!
For all of you technology addicts out there, you probably know that Apple’s keynote for 2010 was released today. A variety of things happened; I’m here today to basically sum it all up for you.
Like in every one of Apple’s keynotes, Steve Jobs is there wearing his typical outfit, jeans and a black shirt. But there’s much more behind this man, he provides the latest news for us to read upon.
Steve started out the keynote by mentioning all the updates and news they have at Apple. He mentioned that they hit a huge number of sales for the iPod, 250 million iPods have been sold since their very early launch that was quite some time ago of the first iPod. That’s an amazing number, but there’s even more stunning numbers from Apple coming up soon.
So far, Apple has 284 Apple stores total. This is a really amazing number. But the thing is, throughout the whole US, that’s quite a small number. Even in some areas, there’s no Apple store around you in a good driving distance. Hopefully, Apple will be able to make more Apple stores; you know what, it’s always fun to see them anyways. I can say, the architecture of these buildings are for sure top-notch. And lastly, in these Apple stores, they have over 50 million visitors! Every single time I walk in an Apple store, I see everyone having a great time and so much enjoyment going around me. This might be funny, but it’s a great hang-out place; no wonder why they hit that many visitors!
In the App Store, they were able to hit 140,000 applications. This is a huge number because think about it, the App Store was released July 10, 2008. In a little under two years, developers were able to create that many applications. I wonder if that includes all the lite versions too!
With 140,000 applications, they’ve had 3 billion app downloads in the past 18 months just a few weeks ago. This truly is a huge success for Apple.
From all of those app downloads, everyone buying their new Mac, and everyone who buys new iPods, Apple was able to earn 15.6 billion dollars this fiscal year. You know what, I like some companies, Apple isn’t one of those who wants to take your money, instead, they’re on a mission to create high quality top-brand products. And you know what, I’m using one of them right now.
In the end of all of these app downloads, from all the money they’ve earned, you’d think they’d get something more out of it. They did… they were able to become the largest mobile devices company ever to be out there! Everywhere I look, I see an iPhone, I see a MacBook, I even see iPods; they for sure have a lot of mobile products out there that people just love and adore.
That’s not everything Steve mentioning. The heart of this presentation has to be to their new invention, the iPad, which was thought to be called the iSlate at first. I’m not going to go too in-depth because Jack already did a blog post on it, but Steve really focussed on this new tablet. To be honest, we have no idea where this is going to take us. I can tell you it’s probably going to be like the iPod when it was first launched. I can see a few people using it at first, and as it catches on to people, it gets more and more popular.
I was really hoping this would replace the Modbook. If it were a full computer based on Mac OS 10, I would for sure pick one of these up if I had the money to do so. But when Apple makes it based on the iPhone OS, you loose a lot of functionality. Steve Job even said himself that netbooks are slow; he didn’t want to create a netbook. But why didn’t they create something based on Mac OS 10; probably because they wanted it to run quickly on the 1GHz processor that’s in the iPad.
As a developer, I was really hoping it wouldn’t affect any of the iPhone applications already made. From what Steve had said, it’ll be able to play a good number of the apps that are already available in the AppStore. I noticed one thing though, when you first launch some apps, it actually remains the same size it does on your iPhone/iPod touch. The app that was originally made for the iPhone/iPod touch will be 480 x 320 first, that is, until you scale it up. The only issue with this is I can see a lot of graphics getting distorted. And when it comes to scaling, I don’t know for sure, but wouldn’t it be hard to scale a game to the native resolution of the iPad, which is 1024 x 768, with an app like Asphalt 5? I would believe so. I wonder how this will be for the graphics card and the battery life if it’ll have to scale up a 3D game.
I’ve enjoyed the 2010 keynote for Apple; it for sure was a nice one. And if you’re an app developer for the iPhone OS, you can start developing for the iPad.
