To all the Palm fans out there, this is your lucky day. Today, Palm has announced the beta release for webOS 2.0! According to Palm, it’s the biggest update yet. By looking at the pictures, they didn’t really overhaul the UI, but I do notice some new features right away. Let’s go over then right now.

Stacks - This is the feature that I noticed right away. Apparently, it’s called Stacks. This is an enhancement to Palm’s already excellent multitasking system. Stacks automatically groups similar apps in one stack. For example, when you open a link in the mail client or an app, the cards (apps) would stick together. I think that this is a nice little organization feature for webOS 2.0
Just Type - Just type is Universal Search for webOS. Although this was already in an older version of webOS, the feature was hidden. If you wanted to search in 1.x, you just type on the keyboard and will give you results. Apparently, Palm wants to make it more visible so they’ve decided to put the search on the home screen. It’s no different than the old search, but developers has APIs for allowing custom search engines that allows you to search in-app and on device.
Exhibition – This feature basically expands the possibilities for Palm’s Touchstone charger, which is similar to Powermat. Palm is allowing developers to make their own small apps like weather info, photo slideshows, clocks, etc. It’s a really nice feature that anyone would appreciate.
Synergy – This feature has been on webOS for quite a while now. If you don’t know what Synergy is, it is a feature that keeps your email accounts and contacts always in sync. This feature reminds me of Microsoft Exchange. Palm has enhanced this feature. They’ve opened up this feature to developers for creating custom address books and IM clients.
HTML5 - Palm is finally adding HTML 5 to their browser. This makes the Palm Pre to support both the popular Adobe Flash and HTML5.
Those are some new major features in webOS 2.0. I’m hoping that this update will also enhance performance and battery life. So, what are your thoughts on webOS? What are some features that you want in it? Please put your answer in the comments.
